Last year I sent a letter to UNO, unfortunately I didn't even get a reply back. No reply to my letter, seems to have been ignored. But I digress. They need to market the Arena if they want to stay relevant.
This was the meat of the letter:
Most people know of the Professional Basketball Legend, Larry Bird. Most people don’t
know that Larry Bird’s highest scoring NBA game was 60 points. Even fewer know that
he accomplished this feat in UNO LAKEFRONT ARENA! The game was March 12th
1985, setting a new Boston Celtics franchise record and marking one of basketball's
greatest shooting performances, featuring fall-a-ways, three-pointers, and clutch free
throws against the Atlanta Hawks. I had this conversation with Stacy Hollowell, and he
was not aware that this happened in our UNO Lakefront Arena!!
My suggestion is to get a tribute to Larry Bird hanging from the rafters of Lakefront
Arena, his Celtics Jersey Number #33, with the March 12, 1985 date, and Career High
60 Points. This could help recruiting of players – playing in the arena where Larry Bird
created magic, a motivational memento for our players to achieve greatness. We could
possibly get former great UNO players and coaches to endorse the request, Ervin
Johnson, Tony Harris, Ledell Eackles, Tim Floyd, etc. (I know I left a bunch out!)
I’m sure this can be done – it would be a tribute to Larry Bird and his impact to the game
and a great recruitment tool for UNO. Please consider this, we need to do these things
if we are to remain competitive in Athletics!
