Bring back Laffitte the Instigator - WhyCantYouSpell - 09-16-2026
Having a Privateer mascot named after our old Identity doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
I've also never really liked BrUNO.
The branding has been great, mascot. Eh whatever
Maybe I'm crazy, but I'd like to see a nod to our older mascot return.
if the department has to buy a new one anyway.
Bring back Laffite the Instigator.

Personally I like the New Orleans logo....the current one. I am not sure how that fits into the Instagator as I would have to see the "mock up" of both before I could be convinced one is better than the other.

Love the Privateer head logo. It's one of the few thing the departments gotten right lately.
Laffitte doesn't really match that current logo, but I jut think he's a cooler and more unique looking than BrUNO.
Give me a white alligator over a generic cartoon human any day.

He doesn't really need to. Plenty of mascots don't match the athletics logo.
BrUNO's fine, there was never really anything wrong with BrUNO, it's just that Lafitte was the best and never should have been supplanted. BrUNO was a force and was a fix for something that wasn't broken.
The current Privateer head logo, on the other hand, was a GREAT change and hopefully will continue be our permanent logo long into the future. We went through many years in the logo wilderness without settling on one (the Amy Champion-era Privateer head was a straight ripoff). This one is distinctive and unique, whether in blue or purple/gold, and it has staying power. Our only other truly good logo was Running Privateer, and while I love Running Privateer, he is the 80s-est thing that ever 80s-ed.

I've noticed that they really don't promote association with Lafitte anymore. I have no idea, but I wonder if it is because Jean Lafitte was involved with the slave trade.

I love the present logo and agree that we lived in the wilderness for many years. We couldn't seem to figure out who we were back then (including the red/white/blue era), but this one has staying power. And I like that our nickname is so unique, in fact one of only 2 colleges with that nickname, the other being SUNY Maritime College (DIII).
