After marketing blitz, LSU New Orleans boosts recruitment but misses enrollment goal - SECOER - 09-11-2026 https://www.nola.com/news/education/lsu-new-orleans-uno-recruitment-enrollment/article_09e79cb0-18f7-409e-b39d-1fb653040cc7.html#tncms-source=the-latest We set a goal and came up short which is disappointing but also not unexpected by me and honestly I think it was a good goal to have. I think the University will address this shortfall with a more targeted approach for who they want on campus based on JR's comments yesterday at the Founders Club meeting. "With 5,531 students registered as of Sept. 3, enrollment fell short of the target. Weiland said the decline was partly due to the loss of about 150 students from Slidell High School who stopped participating in the university’s dual-enrollment program. This year, LSUNO doubled its dual-enrollment fees from $150 to $300 per course to match LSU’s prices." I also believe the increase in fees and tuition are a factor for some people. However if they are from the New Orleans area I would hope that they look at the total cost of staying a home vs going out of the city for their education in the future. "A decade ago, the majority of UNO’s students came from top-performing high schools, but now many come from lower-performing schools, he said. Students who are unprepared for rigorous coursework often struggle in college and end up leaving." I would expect that the recruiting team will have to really make a push to reengage the local Catholic and top tier magnet schools. The quality of the student and their ability to hit the ground that first year is critical. It was a mistake to just take "anyone" but there should be plan for those who need the extra help to enroll in Delgado / Nunez and have a much easier move to the LSU New Orleans campus after their core courses are successfully completed. Even a dual enrollment type set up. The target is going to be not only the city but also out of state students and some international students looking for a "value" in the LSU system. RE: After marketing blitz, LSU New Orleans boosts recruitment but misses enrollment goal - reduno - 09-11-2026 I had hoped for better but, at least its a move to the positive side.......and its just the first semester under the new regime. RE: After marketing blitz, LSU New Orleans boosts recruitment but misses enrollment goal - CatCam - 09-11-2026 I think it will take a few years to knock the tarnish off of our university. Just like a brand name that has a bad run, people need the product to be out a few years to buy the product again. Looking at what has transpired in the last year I 100% believe we are on the right path. Jeanette Weiland seems to be a great fit and I think she would be a great Chancellor. Looking at the Basketball program, the hire of Stacy Hollowell was a phenomenal....and the supporting cast of Ervin Johnson, John Brady, along with some new eager assistants makes me excited for the program. It will take time to rebuild the brand. RE: After marketing blitz, LSU New Orleans boosts recruitment but misses enrollment goal - Slidell - 09-11-2026 I think we all know it's not going to be fixed overnight. I do like what I'm seeing and hearing - though the years have taught me to be skeptical. We've heard a lot of talk before. This time feels different though. There finally feels like there is an alignment between LSU and the LSU New Orleans leadership. RE: After marketing blitz, LSU New Orleans boosts recruitment but misses enrollment goal - EE_Privateer - 09-11-2026 Probably not enough time since the transfer to the LSU system in July to have a big effect this semester. Hopefully we'll see much better enrollment numbers in the Spring and next Fall. Yesterday at the Founder Day club meeting JR praised a lot of people for their hard work. She mentioned Gio and the athletic department a few times during her presentation. I think in addition to the alignment with the LSU system with the leadership of LSU New Orleans, there is a real partnership with the LSU New Orleans leaders on campus including the athletic department as a partner in the future success of the university. In the past it is my belief that athletics was considered an auxilarry and not a full functioning part of the campus. This time is truly feels different in the overall approach. I think it is more real than it has been in the past so that is going to be my take until I see something different. |
