ALUM WATCH: Miguel Useche climbing the ladder with Cubs - Steve - 08-05-2026

I've commented previously that Eric Orze is likely the last guy that will ever come straight out of UNO and make it to major league baseball.

There's a decent chance that will hold up, but it bears mentioning the season that former Privateer catcher Miguel Useche is having in the Cubs' system.  He had a good run at Single-A South Bend, has been promoted to AA Knoxville, and has been tearing the cover off the ball since arriving at AA.  He just had home runs in both ends of today's doubleheader in Chattanooga and is, as of my typing this post, OPS'ing over 1.000.

Still don't think he's considered a big prospect, but just a guy to keep an eye on.

Glad to see him doing well as Nathan Blasick got called up to Double AA Hartford after winning 10 games in Single A. He has one scoreless inning in AA so he is another guy to keep a eye on. AlsoBeau Blanchard who started with UNO he got called up to Chattanooga in AA as well

He got another one tonight. Third homer in two nights for Miguel.

I'm hoping he will still be with the Smokies in three weeks when they visit Biloxi. I'm going to go catch a couple of those games and maybe see him play. Although if they want to promote him to Iowa that'd be fine too.

I just saw that Miguel is on the Arizona Fall League roster. I wish him the best

Kinda off subject and I assume this will not be met with much agreement but, FWIW, the cubs were finished in late May. I knew it then....Counsel is a HORRIBLE game day mgr. The Brewers have improved every year since Hoyer made this horrible decision and have owned the cubs....They got better and made their biggest rival worse.

Rant off

I think the manager barely matters. The pitching is not close to what you need to get through October. But when your offense produces 1 run in two games, that doesn't even get a chance to matter.

Milwaukee is a better organization. The reason Counsell was an appealing managerial candidate is because he won a lot with Milwaukee, because they are the better organization. If the Cubs somehow hired Pat Murphy tomorrow, he would lose in the playoffs because the Webbs and Thielbars of the world get exposed in October (actually before October but you know what I mean).

Should have run Useche out there against the Padres, couldn't have done any worse! I went to a couple of Smokies/Shuckers games last month and he looked good, saw him have a 3-hit game. Will be curious if he makes the jump to Iowa next year.

He certainly couldn't do any worse. But even so, Counsel wouldn't be smart enough to know when to put him in.

And the trade they made last season? O my!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The cubs are the cubs because they are the cubs. They are the definition of losers, no matter their record. I waste a lot of time following losers. But when the fans keep filling the stadium and paying whatever is needed, no changes will be made.
